DETROIT, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is hosting an in-person public meeting to discuss the removal of the McClellan Avenue overpass at I-94 in Detroit. At this meeting, the project team will be sharing information about demolition schedules, vehicular and pedestrian detours, and an overview of the reconfiguration of the Gratiot Avenue interchange.

Weather permitting, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be setting steel bridge beams on the Grand River Avenue overpass above I-94 this weekend. This work will require closing westbound I-94 from I-75 to I-96 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. Westbound I-94 is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14.

Due to safety concerns, a high wind advisory expected for Saturday has forced the postponement of the planned westbound I-94 weekend closure from I-75 to I-96. Details will be announced when the rescheduled beam setting dates are confirmed.    

Weather permitting, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be setting steel bridge beams on the Grand River Avenue overpass above I-94 this weekend. This work will require closing westbound I-94 from I-75 to I-96 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4. Westbound I-94 is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7.

Weather permitting, structural work will require closing the northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) ramp to eastbound I-94 in Detroit at noon on Monday, Oct. 24. The ramp closure is needed for the safety of crews and motoring public while work continues on the new Second Avenue bridge over I-94.

DETROIT, Mich. ¬– After successfully moving and securing the new Second Avenue bridge over I-94 in Detroit, crews will reopen the freeway at 6 a.m. Friday, July 29. The move required closing both directions of I-94 between I-75 and M-10 (Lodge Freeway) for seven days.

This work will require closing I-94 between I-75 and I-96 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, April 8. Both directions of I-94 are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, April 11.

November 17, 2021 – Weather permitting, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be setting bridge beams at the Burns Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit this weekend. This work will require closing both directions of I-94 between I-75 and M-3 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19. This section of I-94 is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22.

November 10, 2021 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be removing the Third Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit this weekend. This work will require closing both directions of I-94 between I-96 and I-75 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12. This section of I-94 is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15.

November 4, 2021 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be setting new steel bridge beams at the Frontenac Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit this weekend. This work will require closing both directions of I-94 between M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) and I-75 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5. This section of I-94 is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8.

September 10, 2021 — Tonight, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be entering another stage on the replacement of the Burns Street, Cadillac Avenue and Frontenac Street overpasses above I-94 in Detroit. This stage will require closing the M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) exit ramps to eastbound and westbound I-94 until early 2022.

March 10, 2021 — Weather permitting, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be demolishing the Cadillac Avenue overpass above I-94 in Detroit this weekend. This work will require closing both directions of I-94 between I-75 and Conner Avenue starting at 9 p.m. Friday, March 12. All lanes of I-94 are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, March 15.

February 17, 2021 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be demolishing the Frontenac Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit this weekend.

February 8, 2021 — This year, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be replacing three overpasses over I-94 in the city of Detroit.

September 30, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews are replacing the Milwaukee Street overpass above I-75 in Detroit, and this project will hit another milestone this weekend when crews install new bridge beams.

September 16, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be setting bridge beams on the East Grand Boulevard overpass and continue road resurfacing that will require closing westbound I-94 from I-696 to I-75 this weekend.

July 31, 2020 – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced today that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has published the necessary environmental documentation to the Federal Register for the I-94 modernization project in Detroit.

July 8, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be demolishing the Mt. Elliott Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit this weekend.

March 23, 2020 — The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has posted transcripts of the October 2019 public hearing regarding the I-94 modernization project in the city of Detroit.

March 18, 2020 — The Michigan Department of Transportation has closed the Cass Avenue overpass above I-94 in Detroit for bridge deck repair.

February 20, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will complete the demolition of the East Grand Boulevard overpass this weekend with doublelane closures starting Saturday morning.

February 11, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be demolishing the East Grand Boulevard overpass on consecutive weekends in February.

February 7, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will begin prep work Monday, Feb. 10, to replace the Mt. Elliot Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit.

MICHIGAN (CBS DETROIT) – The Michigan Department of Transportation has been awarded a $1 million Accelerated Innovation Deployment grant by the United States Department of Transportation for the ongoing replacement of the Second Avenue overpass above I-94 in Detroit.

January 15, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be demolishing the Second Avenue overpass starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17.

December 20, 2019 — For public safety, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close the Second Avenue overpass above I-94 in Detroit on Saturday morning.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will hold two public hearings regarding a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS) and section 4(f) Evaluation for proposed improvements on I-94.

Eastbound and westbound I-94 will be reduced from three lanes to one lane each between US-24 and I-275 this weekend to complete work on the shoulders, which will be used as temporary lanes through the fall.

December 9, 2020 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be setting bridge beams on the Mt. Elliott Street overpass that will require closing I-94 from M-3 to I-75 in Detroit this weekend.

May 15, 2019 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will move into another phase on the project to replace the Brush Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit.

April 10, 2019 – Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, April 12, the northbound and southbound I-75 ramps to westbound I-94 will close in conjunction with the Brush Street overpass replacement.

April 9, 2019 — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be demolishing the Brush Street overpass starting at 9 p.m. Friday, April 12.

A news conference and public event at Team Elmer’s in Traverse City to kick off National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), April 8-12. Safety leaders across Michigan are coming together to create awareness and discuss challenges and solutions for work zone safety.

MDOT staff will share project details on the upcoming replacement of the Brush Street overpass above I-94. This $11.6 million replacement will improve safety by rebuilding the overpass that was originally constructed in 1955 and has never been replaced.

March 7, 2019 — Weather permitting, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will begin prep work Saturday, March 9, to replace the French Road and Concord Street overpasses above I-94 in Detroit. All work on this $17.6 million investment is scheduled to be completed in November.

An open house-style meeting to inform the public on the replacement of the Concord Avenue and French Road overpasses above I-94 in Detroit. Coinciding with the meeting, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be seeking vital input to help establish a vision and priorities for a new state long-range transportation plan.

Two house-style meetings to inform the public on project progress and gather community input on the future I-94 modernization project in Detroit. The public will be able to provide feedback on the progress of the Supplemental Environmental Impact Study (SEIS) that was launched in July 2017.

October 23, 2018 — The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be closing portions of I-94 in Detroit over the next three weekends. The closures between I-75 and Conner Street will alternate between the eastbound and westbound lanes, with one closure including both directions.

July 24, 2018 — Weather permitting, contracting crews will be demolishing the second half of the M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) overpass and setting bridge beams at the Chene Street overpass starting Friday, July 27. This work will require closing westbound I-94 at 8:30 p.m. and eastbound I-94 at 9 p.m. between Conner Avenue and I-75 for the weekend. All lanes of the freeway are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, July 30.

March 14, 2018 — Weather permitting, both directions of I-94 will be closed between Conner Avenue and I-75 in Detroit this weekend for demolition of the M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) and Chene Street overpasses. In addition to the bridge demolition, crews will be deployed for detailed inspections on other bridges, pavement repair, and utility work within the closure limits. The closure begins at 9 p.m. Friday and ends by 5 a.m. Monday.

March 12, 2018 — Weather permitting, contracting crews will be demolishing a portion of the M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) and Chene Street overpasses starting at 9 p.m. Friday, March 16. The demolition will require closing I-94 between Conner Avenue and I-75 for the weekend. All lanes of the freeway are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, March 19.
